Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we prepare for the school vacation, I would like to take a moment to reflect upon the accomplishments of our students of the past few weeks.
In December, we honored the arts through two important ceremonies. Our entire school took part in the renowned Poetry Out Loud competition, highlighted by a schoolwide assembly where our top finalists brilliantly performed a wonderful selection of poetic works. We are pleased to announce that Liv Bailey will be representing Yarmouth at the Westbrook Performing Arts Center for the next round of competition.
In addition to performing in several concerts and community events this month, our students put on a tremendous schoolwide concert that featured both our choral and instrumental talents. Many of our singers and musicians will be competing in upcoming district and state festivals, and we wish them luck with their endeavors.
In the spirit of Renaissance learning, our 9th grade students recently participated in the national Hour of Code, giving them the opportunity to explore coding and other activities related to technology. Throughout December, teachers also brought students to Brooks Automation providing insight into robotics and engineering, visited the Maine College of Art, and attended performances at the Portland Stage.
Winter activities are now well underway, and we are looking forward to watching our student athletes compete on the courts, tracks, pools, and slopes. Our Unified Club will be supporting the Unified basketball team and promoting inclusion with "Fans in the Stands" t-shirts. These cost $12 and are available in men's sizes (S, M, L, XL and 2XL). Those interested in placing an order should contact Mary Beth Neault by email (marybeth_neault@yarmouthschools.org) by 12/23. Our hope is to have the t-shirts delivered in time for the opening Unified Basketball game on January 28th.
TedTalks have featured some powerful and inspirational messages to worldwide audiences, and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Yarmouth High School’s version of this - our Day of Hope which took place the first weekend in December. We are proud of our students for their continued efforts to make the world a better place.
Mr. Creech, Ms. Bongard and I are incredibly appreciative to work in a community that places such value on education. On behalf of the administrative team, we wish you a restful December vacation and look forward to the new year.
