Class of 2018: Summer Planning for Senior Year

posted Jun 29, 2017, 7:07 AM by YHS Guidance

As we wind down the year in the guidance office, we wanted to take the opportunity to share some important college-related information for the summer months.

Virtual Tours
Many college websites offer virtual tours - a great way to see campus without having to travel to every school! To see if your schools offer virtual tours, just Google the school name along with "virutal tour" (for example "NYU Virtual Tour").

*New! August SAT Registration Test Date
Registration deadline for the August 26 SAT is July 28th. Register with your College Board account at www.collegeboard.org

SAT Practice and Prep
We recommend khanacademy.org for free and helpful SAT practice and preparation tips. More information regarding local SAT prep courses will be emailed this fall.

College Essay Information and Workshop

The Telling Room in Portland will be hosting a College Essay Workshop on August 28 and 30 from 6-8pm at the Merrill Library in Yarmouth. Sessions are limited to 12 students, and cost $250. Learn more here and register at http://tellingroom.org/collegeessay.

The Common Application has released its 2017-2018 essay prompts. Summer is a great time to start working on your essay! See below for the full list of prompts. Students will need to choose one prompt for their Common Application

1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome

4. Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.

5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?

7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.

A final reminder that the guidance office will be open until this Friday, June 30th and then will close for the summer. We will re-open on Monday, August 21st. If you need assistance during the summer months, please contact the main office at 846-5535 or Kate_Pietropaoli@yarmouthschools.org. Beth and Brenda will be checking their email periodically throughout the summer as well.

Have a wonderful summer - we look forward to starting your senior year with you in September!
